LEIF GARBISCH
Leif Garbisch grew up with the sun either in his eyes or at his back. Stars, the moon, and incandescent bulbs also made their mark. He loved light from an early age and soon began to express his appreciation in photographs. Later, he studied literature at Columbia and Brown and published three novels, Conduit, The Shore, and The Magic Us. He also has four books of photography and poetry: Found Light, Transformation, Shared Sky, and Generosity. He and his wife now split time between upstate New York, where there are four seasons and mid-coast Florida, where there are three grandchildren.
HOLDING LIGHT - Nature & Landscape Photography Exhibition
Images and words come relatively quickly. Truth on the other hand, along with answers to questions about our life on earth, come slowly. I am interested in what comes more slowly and builds an enduring relationship with others and with our planet. Words and images are windows into a growing connection with life itself. Life came before us. It came before trees and algae, before mushrooms, bacteria, and clouds. It gives us time and asks that I, whoever I am, get to know it better. Through my leading, learning self and all my growing attention, I slowly open the door to understanding and to the approach of love. Love is not yet fully realized on earth. And yet it longs to live together with us here. For me, connecting in the fullest, deepest sense with all of life, welcoming through words and images and all ways love – this is what my artistic work seeks to be and to do. It is what everyone’s work, no matter what in the world that work is, may likewise be and do.
