Gretchen Kelly
At a young age, Gretchen Kelly was influenced by the art books and magazines in the home she grew up in. Some of her earliest drawings, saved by her mother were foretelling. “Girl in Apple Dress”, a sketch at age four depicted a textile pattern on a naive drawing in blue pen. Gretchen won an Honorable mention award at age sixteen for Levi’s Art Denim Contest and another award for second place for an illustration in Seventeen Magazine’s annual art contest for teens, both of which were published in a book and magazine respectively. Gretchen would grow up to balance a career of fashion design and pattern design with art. As a designer in NYC she designed scarves, textiles and tabletop designs for top designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Adrienne Vittadini, Anne Klein, Ellen Tracy, Ralph Lauren, Tahari, Laura Ashely along with top brands such as Target, Kohls, Walmart and others.
Focusing on her art, now living in the Hudson Valley, she paints with watercolor selling subjects that include flowers, nudes, and plein air landscapes. Recently, murals have been a focus along with other special projects that include paintings for scenic design and costume making.
Gretchen has been selling her work online through her websites and her Etsy shop since 2006 and shows her work often, locally in gallery group shows and popup shops. Recently she has gallery representation in Atlanta with Gregg Irby Gallery.
